Choosing the Right Wing Foiling Leash: A Comprehensive Overview

Every wing foiler needs to have a safe and effective leash system to keep their foil board and hand wing close at all times but having multiple leashes connecting you to your gear can be frustrating and problematic.

Foil board leashes and wing leashes vary in length, leash style, and where they attach to you. Choosing the best leashes for your personal preferences and riding style will enhance your time on the water.

Wing Leash: Waist vs. Wrist

The main difference in hand wing leashes is where they attach to your body. Wrist leashes attach to your wrist with a velcro strap and waist leashes attach to a waist belt or wing foil harness that you wear while riding.

Waist Leash: The best choice if you value easily being able to paddle your board

Armstrong Ultimate Waist Leash

Advantages

  • Waist leashes provide a hands-free experience, allowing you to release the wing and have both hands available for activities such as paddling.
  • Greater freedom of movement in your upper body, which can be especially beneficial when paddling the board

Disadvantages

Wrist Leash: The best choice if you value quick wing retrieval

Advantages

  • Wrist leashes generally have a lower risk of tangling with your body or gear because the attachment point on the wing is closer to your wrist than your waist.
  • Wrist leashes allow you to retrieve your wing easier as it is attached to your wrist and you can pull it towards you in one fluid motion - this is especially useful in waves.
  • Naish Wing Wrist Leash

Board Leash: Calf vs. Ankle

Calf Leash: Advantages and Disadvantages

  • The advantages of calf leashes are that they are attached further up on your leg which makes them less likely to be stepped on and also less likely to get tangled with your gear or your feet
  • Located on a pressure point when you are kneeling on the board and can be uncomfortable. If you are a beginner and spend a lot of time on your knees, an ankle leash is probably a better option

Ankle Leash: Advantages and Disadvantages

  • Ankle leashes are generally considered more secure in turbulent water conditions and situations where quick recovery is crucial, making them the go-to attachment choice for use in powerful waves
  • More prone to tangling with your feet or foil because they are attached closer to these areas

After testing lots of leashes for wing foiling these are my favorite products. Depending on where you are in your wing foiling journey you may be using a harness so I included my go-to harness and wing leash products as well.
